Wondering about Wander the Resort

Wander the Resort in Prince Edward County has been on our radar since the summer of 2020 when we first learned the former Sunrise Cottage Resort was to be redeveloped.  We followed the transformation closely and we were excited to finally have the opportunity to book an overnight stay and dine in early March 2024.

As wedding professionals, this behind-the-scenes venue scouting is one of the ways we ensure our recommendations are deeply informed and genuinely personalized. Whether we are exploring a luxury resort, dining under the stars, or assessing how a property flows for guests over a full weekend, we are always considering how each space could support a seamless and meaningful celebration.

There is no denying that Wander the Resort has undergone an impressive transformation. With our own experience renovating residential properties, we especially appreciated the care taken to modernize the cabins while preserving the nostalgic charm of the original lakeside cottage community.

Our Stay at Wander the Resort

Upon arrival at WTR, we were eager to witness the extensive renovations that had taken place. The resort has indeed undergone a significant transformation, skillfully blending modern upgrades with the nostalgic charm of the cabin community. Our stay in the Hawthorn cabin provided us with insights into the resort's offerings and areas for improvement.

Accommodations: A Blend of Charm and Modernity

The cabin's open truss design, enhanced by gable-end windows, provided an abundance of natural light and an airy ambiance. The kitchen, dining, and living areas were spacious, featuring sleek Miele appliances. However, we noted the absence of a microwave, which might be a convenient addition for some guests.

While the common spaces of the cabin were accessible, the bedrooms and bathroom fell short of these standards. The sleeping arrangements were quite compact, and the bathroom's location between the bedrooms proved inconvenient. Additionally, the lack of storage and missing wall hooks in the bedrooms were noticeable shortcomings.

Exploring the Grounds

Outside, the resort grounds were meticulously maintained with well-lit pathways and welcoming fire pits. Each cabin boasted a semi-private deck, offering scenic views of the surroundings. However, from our vantage point, we observed that the painted roofs of several cabins were beginning to peel, revealing the original blue tint. This was particularly noticeable from the Gather dining area, which overlooks the lake.

Dining at Gather

Dining at the onsite restaurant, Gather, was a highlight of our stay. The menu catered to a variety of tastes with reasonably priced, locally-sourced offerings, a comforting feature during the cooler months. The staff was warm and inviting, enhancing our overall dining experience. Dinner was so good the we forgot to take a photo of it before it was all gone but we did manage to capture our grazing plate for two.

Value and Local Business Support

At $700+ tax per night for a two-bed, poolside cabin, we anticipated a premium experience. While we enjoyed our stay, we felt that the resort's current pricing did not entirely align with the value offered. There are nearby alternatives that provide more luxury and value for similar rates.

Supporting local small businesses, like Wander the Resort, is crucial for community growth and sustainability. By choosing to stay at such establishments, we contribute to the local economy and help preserve the unique character of the area.

Reflecting on the Experience

Overall, our visit to WTR was memorable, and we appreciated the resort's efforts in renovation and guest service. However, for guests considering a stay during ongoing renovations, we recommend checking for potential discounts or reduced rates.
